The oldest and largest brewery in Bend, Oregon is the Deschutes Brewery, founded in 1988 as a “brewpub” by Gary Fish, who was a newcomer to the then sleepy little town of Bend. In it’s first year Deschutes brewed 310 barrels of beer, exceeding all expectations. The breweries flagship beer, Black Butte Porter, was catching on, and for good reason. Emphasizing “quality first … using the highest quality ingredients available, and taking more time and more care in the brewing process …” as well as a focus on the community through it’s locally produced and distinctive product Deschutes became a significant part of a new found microbrewery renaissance. With this mission Deschutes continued to grow steadily over the next 20 years.
As the Deschutes Brewery approaches it’s 23rd anniversary, Bend and the whole Deschutes family can be proud of what they have built. Brewing close to 200,000 barrels a year Deschutes is the number one brewery in Oregon and possibly one of the best in the world.
